BY THE SEA
There are few destinations better than
Malibu—or “the ‘bu,” as it’s known to
locals—for learning to surf. If your kids
have been eager to learn, there are plenty
of classes available at any of Malibu’s
beaches. A typical lesson will last from an
hour to an hour and a half, and is offered
on an individual or group basis for all
skill levels.
Malibu’s popular surfing beach is
appropriately named Surfrider
Beach. As the first World Surfing
Reserve, Surfrider Beach
set the pace for beaches
to be protected from
development. Its perfectly
breaking waves make it a popular
destination for both swimmers and
surfers alike.
If your family prefers to watch the
pros from shore, there are designated
swimming areas on many beaches for
paddle boarding, boogie boarding or just
floating atop the waves. Family members
that prefer to stay off the waves will
have plenty of fun on land as Malibu’s
beaches have no shortage of sandy shores
perfect for sunbathing, picnics and sand
volleyball. Whether you’re taking up
an activity or just lounging in the sun,
Malibu’s beauty will have you in awe.
It’s not uncommon to find people
pier fishing in Malibu, where halibut,
thresher shark and bat rays can be
found in certain seasons, and corbina
and mackerel are caught year round.
Fishing shops provide everything you
need, from bait to rod rentals.
Deep sea fishing trips are also
available off the Malibu coast, ranging
from half day to overnight expeditions.
Whale watching cruises are another
