J
Generation Stress
I
n the good old days when
you were young, sugar
came from a just-ripe peach,
your favorite after-school
activity was bike riding,
and a friend’s compliment about
your sweater brought a smile to
your face. Each brought a rush of
happiness and contentment to the
reward center in your brain.
But today’s world is not the
one in which you grew up. Bullying
at school, domestic violence
in our homes, crimes in our
communities and a national
epidemic of opioid abuse plague
our society.
Our children are not only
shouldering that exposure, but
are also struggling to exert their
independence while dealing with
peer pressure and fluctuating
self-esteem. Consequently, they
may be choosing unhealthy
coping strategies, from lying and
cheating to self-harm and drug use.
At the heart of the matter is what
our children have—quite literally—at
their fingertips.
Researchers say teens spend an
average of nearly nine hours a day
consuming media, including social
media. It provides an instant reward
to their brains, releasing the neuro-
chemical dopamine, which helps control
the brain’s reward and pleasure centers.

An overstressed teen may complain of sleepiness, insomnia, headaches or stomach pains.
