Q:
I’m feeling stressed out. My parents are getting divorced,
school is just too much, and my life is a mess. My friend told
me to take Xanax to help me not worry as much. Should I
take it?
– Carson, 8th grade, Hyde Park, Massachusetts
A:
Carson, school and family issues can be overwhelming,
but you should never take a medicine that isn’t prescribed
to you by a doctor. There are many healthy ways to deal
with stress such as exercising, journaling or listening to mu-
sic. However, if it feels like too much to
handle, talk to a trusted adult.
Q:
I’m sitting here with piles of homework, a proj-
ect is due, and I have to prepare for a student govern-
ment meeting. Plus, I have to leave for a three-hour dance
practice. There aren’t enough hours in the day and I’m so
stressed out. How do I keep going?
– Ashlyn, 8th grade, Westlake, California
A:
Ashlyn, it sounds like you’re a very smart, motivated
young lady. It ’s great you are so active, however balance
is key. When you find yourself with heightened stress and
deadlines, it ’s OK (and encouraged!) to respectfully say no
to certain activities and focus on your top priorities. Talk
with your teachers and coaches to make adjustments for
your overall well-being.
